Caledonian Canal

The Caledonian Canal offers a scenic passage between the North Sea with canal ranging from cruisers, ocean going yachts, fishing boats and the occasional naval vessel, as well as several firms based on the canal offering both motor cruisers and yachts for charter, day trips, hotel boats and even a cruise ship! The canal’s towpaths form part of 2 sustainable long distance routes through the Great Glen, namely the Great Glen Way and the Great Glen Mountain Bike Trail, and visitors can now enjoy the beautiful scenery by boat, bike or boot!

Digital Yacht has introduced a new Class B AIS Transponder suitable for use on leisure and small commercial vessels. Called the SMARTERTrack AIT250, it incorporates an AIS transmitter as well as receiver, allowing your vessel's position, identity and track to be relayed to other vessels equipped with AIS equipment.

I will be going through some very busy commercial shipping areas and this equipment will allow me to see and be seen.

AIS is now not being fitted for operational reasons but please support MES, they are still helping by supporting the event and they offer great service, support and pricing for all your boating electronic needs.

Thank you to Garmin UK for providing electronic charts for the entire coastline of the UK for use in the backup chartplotter - Garmin GPSMAP 76CS.

At any time enroute where I am out of site of land I will be using the second plotter to confirm the operation of the main plotter. The Garmin GPSMAP 76CS may be a handheld device but it is a very capable and easy to use plotter. I have had mine for over 2 years now and wouldn't go to sea without it.

British Waterways

Thank you to British Waterways Scotland for allowing me free passage through the Caledonian Canal.

Some have said that I am missing something by going through the canal instead of going round the north of Scotland but I strongly disagree. The Caledonian Canal is one of the legs I am most looking forward too... great scenary, sheltered passage, the fun of the locks... it is a great place for a holiday and my 3 days passing through will be my half way holiday!

We can dry berth up to 10m and 5 tonnes but offer storage ashore for the majority of vessels.

We are now moving into the next phase of our development and will soon start the construction of the UK's first purpose built indoor dry stack building.

We will be able to store over 200 boats on racks 4 storeys high in a fully enclosed building.

Stagate is stored at Yacht Haven Quay and I highly recommend them. The service is superb, friendly and helpful and once the new storage building is open it will, without doubt, be the best dry-berth facility in Britain.
