Hi Chris,
I do know roughly what it is using at the moment... on a flatish sea it is doing about 1 ltr/NM and in a rougher sea it is doing about 2 ltr/NM. Clearly it could be anything in between.
It is complicated a little because I have a coarser pitch propeller that I am going to trial. If that gives better fuel consuption then I will use that but I suspect that the difference won't be huge so I am working on the figures above.
As far as I know from reading the regulations... I can have 2 x 10 ltrs when in port but effectively as many as I want when at sea.
Knowing how much I will need on a leg is very difficult and I wouldn't want to commit to a figure because conditions can be so unpredictable.
I am planning on taking 7 x 10 ltr cans when at sea but because of the storage limit of only 2 cans overnight I can not refuel for the next leg until the day of departure. Also, to ensure that I only have 2 cans overnight I will have to top up the main tank from the cans at the end of each leg so that it leaves me with no more than 2 x 10 ltr cans full on board until I refuel on departure day.
Did you follow that?
It is all complicated because I must ensure that I comply with the regulations. Up until now I thought I was within the regs by using 20 ltr cans but I have stopped doing that now I know the rules!
I suggest that we talk again a bit nearer the time after we have had a chance to discuss these issues with the RNLI (who have said they
may be able to help with refueling at some ports) and also lets give the fuel companies a chance to come on board as they may be able to assist also.
Thanks again Chris... keep the good ideas flowing
